| Long Ago and Far Away - Tales of Two Woodcutters | |||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Fans of Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimm Brothers will delight in reacquainting themselves with scenes from their childhood memories. A tribute to centuries-old printmaking techniques, Long Ago and Far Away showcases a set of contemporary woodcuts and unique prints by two talented Indonesian artists, Daniel “Timbul” Cahya Krisna and Francisco Panca. Though widely practiced in the past, the number of woodcut print artists has dwindled in number. The sheer physical labor and longer process contribute to the decrease. In an attempt to re-examine the artistic value of print works, this exhibition features 8 pairs of original woodcuts and their corresponding mirror image prints. Executed manually in carved wood, the carved images are transferred to canvases, which are then painted over, resulting in unique pieces. Refraining from agressive subject elements, both artists who graduated from ISI Yogyakarta are known to incorporate fairy tale and comic characters in their works. The characters symbolize real life personas. Subtly, these elements are used to comment on various contemporary Indonesian social and political issues; and the hidden danger that lurks beneath these innocent looking figures. While Francisco’s works make fun of the uncomfortably comfortable state experienced by urban dwellers, candid and unpretentious Daniel chooses to inspire art lovers of all ages with hope, and to draw upon their childhood dreams for a better tomorrow.

| UN SECRET (M18 - scenes of intimacy and nudity) |
||||||||||||||||
![]() |
On his fifteenth birthday a family friend tells François (Quentin Dubuis) a
shattering truth - tying his family's past to the Holocaust - that may enable
him to develop his own sense of self. Until then, the secret had lain silent,
known only to a few, including his mother Tania (Cécile de France), his father
Maxime (Patrick Bruel) and lifelong family friend Louise (Julie Depardieu). The
backdrop of the war and the Nazi pursuit of Jews provide the story's setting,
but it's as much about human nature as about the Nazi menace. The moral
questions and 'what would I do' factor make the film involving and even a little
disturbing. The movie was nominated for 11 César Awards in 2008.
